Confederation Cup is coming to town! by Sandra Olivier

Touching down on African soil for the first time, the 2009 Fifa Confederations Cup will test South Africa's state of readiness for the 2010 World Cup.

The opening ceremony on June 14 at Joburg's Coca Cola Park - broadcast to millions across the world - will be choreographed by Grammy Award winner Lebo M, the composer famous for arranging the music for the Lion King movies and stage productions, and co-producer of the Lion King production in South Africa.

It is one of the major football competitions in the world and gives an idea of how the nation that is to host the World Cup will cope with the whole affair. The dream of an African World Cup is finally a reality.

Champions Italy, Brazil, Spain and African giants Egypt will parade their galaxy of stars which makes this year's Confederation Cup unique. In football circles this is definitely as good as it gets.

"We approach the tournament with confidence. Our stadiums are ready, our transport and security plans have been fine-tuned and more than 4 000 volunteers have been trained. We know we still have much to do but I can assure you we will not disappoint." said 2010 Local Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan at a press briefing.

Interesting facts about the Confederation Cup:

History: Originally the tournament was organized by Saudi Arabia and it was called the King Fahd Cup (or Intercontinental Championship). In 1992 and 1995 the tournament was contested by the Saudi national side and some continental champions. In 1997, FIFA took over the organization of the tournament, named it the FIFA Confederations Cup and staged the competition every two years up until 2005.

In 2005, FIFA decided to hold the tournament every four years - one year before the World Cup, in the World Cup host country - making it more or less an official dress rehearsal for the World Cup.

Vintage year: Spain, Italy, Brazil - never before have three of the top five teams in the Fifa/Coca-Cola World rankings featured in the same Confederations Cup. It's a line-up fit for the Fifa World Cup Finals. There will also be cause for celebration in Johannesburg on June 18 when Egypt and Italy meet in the 100th match in the history of the Confederations Cup.

Hat trick gala: Two hat tricks in a Confed Cup final in Brazil's 6-0 win over Australia in 1997, with three goals each for Romario and Ronaldo, was unprecedented and has not happened again since.

Continents: Africa is the fourth continent to host the Confederations Cup after stops in three other regions (Asia 4, Europe 2 and North America in 1999).

Reasons to buy England Football Tickets and Travel Packages by Writox

England is one of the most successful soccer teams and has participated in 11 World Cup editions so far. Only seven countries have managed to win the FIFA World Cup and England is one of them having won the title in the year 1966 on home soil.

The Golden Moment

The 1966 FIFA World Cup was the 8th edition in the history of the game and was held in England from 11th July to 30th July. England was chosen as hosts by FIFA in 1960 to celebrate the centenary of the codification of football in England. England won the title beating West Germany 4-2 in the final.
16 teams qualified for the grand event and were divided into four groups of four and top two teams in each group advanced to the quarter-finals. The event didn’t proved to be too exciting though. Teams played defensively and few goals were scored. England finished on the top in their group with only four goals to their credit but having none scored against them.

The Star - David Beckham

The iconic athlete of the English team was born on 2nd May 1975. He was the captain of the National Team from 2000 until 2006, scored in three different FIFA World Cups.
Beckham made his first team debut in 1992 at the age of 17 with Manchester United. The larger credit for the glory Manchester United enjoys today goes to this superstar who led the club to Premier League titles 6 times, FA Cup twice and the UEFA Champions league once. He is the highest paid footballer and for obvious reasons he is one of the most loved footballer not only in England but all over the world and that’s why it doesn’t hurt to pay heavily for England football travel packages no matter what the outcome of the game may be.
Beckham is known for his consistent performance under severe pressure during the most rapidly changing games. His forte has been his delivery from the right hand side and his efficient free kicks.

The Previous World Cup

2006 World Cup was not a very memorable one for the English team as they crashed out of the tournament after losing to Portugal 3-1 in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw. England lost skipper David Beckham to injury just after the half time and Wayne Rooney was sent off after 62 minutes for a stamping on Ricardo Carvalho. Without Beckham it was always going to be an uphill task for the Britons and with the sent off to Rooney, England hopes of winning the World Cup were also gone. English team with 10 players battled bravely and took the game to the penalty shootout only to witness the inevitable.

The winners are awarded the William Webb Ellis Cup. William Webb Ellis was the Rugby School pupil who †according to popular myth †invented the game after picking up the ball during a game of football. South Africa are the current World Champions, having won the 2007 Rugby World Cup final in France on 20 October 2007 with victory over England, the 2003 World Champions and current runners-up. The next Rugby World Cup will take place in 2011 in New Zealand. The hosts for 2015 and 2019 have been announced as England and Japan respectively.

The current model features twenty nations competing over a month in the host nation(s). There are two stages, a group and a knock-out. Nations are divided into four pools, A through to D, of five nations each. The pool allocation system seeds teams ranked one to four from the previous tournament into A to D pools respectively. The other four automatic entrantsâ€"the losing quarter-finalists from the previous tournamentâ€"are drawn into pools at random. The remaining positions in each pool are filled by the qualifiers. Nations play four pool games, playing their respective pool members once. A bonus points system is used during pool play. If two or more teams are level on points, a system of criteria is used to determine the higher rank; the sixth and final criterion decides the higher rank through the Official IRB World Rankings. The winner (first position) and runner-up (second position) of each pool enters the knock-out stage. The knock-out stage consists of quarter- and semi-finals, and then the final. The winner of each pool is placed against a runner-up of a different pool in a quarter-final. The winner of each quarter-final goes on to the semi-finals, where the respective winners proceed to the final. Losers of the semi-finals contest for third place (called the 'Bronze Final'). Should a tie result during an event in the knock-out stages, the winner is determined through extra time. Should that fail, sudden death begins when the next team to score any points is declared with winner; as a last resort, a kicking competition is used.
