World Cup 2010- Italy Draw with Paraguay 1-1 by Ally White

The defending champions Italy had to redouble efforts to save the game and add a point in their match against Paraguay at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town. Paraguay let out a victory due to a mistake of goalkeeper Justo Villar. At the end, both teams got the point with a final scoring of 1-1.

During the first half, Italy controlled the possession of the ball. However, Paraguay gave the initiative to the Italians and played a perfect counterattack. The fight was primarily in midfield, away from the rival’s area, where Paraguay waited patiently.

Paraguay made the first dangerous play to the defense led by Fabio Cannavaro twenty minutes into the game, but in an oversight Enrique Vera left the ball to Montolivo. He missed the pass when shooting with little strength. Paraguay had a clear option but Aureliano Torres hit uncomfortably and his shot went wide. The Azzurri pressured the Guarani and achieved several consecutive corner kicks.

Apparently Italy had the dominion, but could not get clear options in the rival’s area. Paraguay was developing with perfection their defensive scheme. Tactically, the game was a good one, and so it proved when the Paraguayan national team managed to score through a fixed tactical play. Aureliano Torres took a long distance shot and sent his service to Alcaraz, who won the position over Daniele De Rossi and headed the ball. The Italian goalkeeper Buffon could go for the ball and Paraguay scored its first goal.

The second half began with a surprise: the departure of goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. It was speculated from the start of the game that Buffon was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world but still was suffering from some previous injuries. Buffon was replaced by Federico Marchetti.

Since the beginning of the second half, the Italian team tried to the tie the scoring and started surprising Paraguay by pushing harder. Meanwhile, the Guarani team began to take advantage of the spaces, and at minute 54, Enrique Vera shot into the goal of Marchetti, but the ball went slightly over the goal. Italy began to give some space to the Paraguayans and made some mistakes when getting out of their area. Marcelo Lippi did not hesitate to make changes in the Italian squad. He decided to replaced Marchisio to give opportunity to Mauro Camoranesi, while Paraguay respond by changing Torres for Jonathan Santana.

Italy took a corner kick by Simone Pepe. Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar went out in wrong timing and Daniele De Rossi pushed the ball into the back of the net with a header, to put the score 1-1. Due to the tiding goal of Italy, the Paraguayan coach decided to replace Nelson Haedo Valdez for Roque Santa Cruz.

With this replacement, the scheme of the Paraguayan offense didn’t change. On the contrary, there were times when Paraguay was dedicated to contain the attacks of Italy instead of seeking victory. At the end the score remained unchanged and the match finished with a 1-1.

Lippi stated that Italy needs to improve and will do in the following games, as he wasn’t pleased with the performance against Paraguay.

"We've got to improve, and I'm sure that we will improve. But so far I haven't seen any perfect squads at this World Cup. Our condition is improving and as we get better we'll start creating more chances and scoring more goals.â€

â€Our self-confidence will only keep growing game by game. You've also got to consider that we were playing a team that respected us a great deal and sat back virtually the entire time,†said Lippi.

Despite the draw, Italy will continue to defend their title by facing New Zealand on Sunday, June 20th, while Paraguay will play against Slovakia on the same day in the preliminary match.

The current World Cup champions and also a credit of four World Cup winnings is enough to declare that Italy is equivalent to Brazil in talent and records.

Team Italy is also known as Azzuri which means blue- the traditional color of the team. The term is related to the dynasty of Italy and the Italian National Football team is generally known by this name. The youths of Italy spend most of their time playing soccer and every youth wishes to be a member of the National team one day. This makes them the second team to win the most number of World Cup after Brazil.

It will be fascinating to know more about this wonderful team. They first won the title in 1938 with a glorious win against Czechoslovakia in the final. The preceding World cup win in 1942 created history for successfully defending the title. This incident have created great fan follow up for the team and still stands out as the best soccer team the world have ever seen. Then it took pretty much years to win another title back in 1984. The finale was very interesting that will remain fresh in every soccer fans mind. The 3-1 victory with the remarkable goal in the 83rd minute was awesome. And finally in 2006, they kissed the World Cup again with a pretty tough match with France and ended in a 5-3 victory. He is truly the backbone of Italys winning and is considered to be one of the best 125 living footballers by Pele. It will be bad if I left out the Italian Captain Fabio Cannavaro who won the FIFA World Player of the year in 2006. He has been the Captain for 133 games and record of the most capped Italian national team player also goes to this 37 year old. Another great player in the team is Andrea Pirlo who is a free kick specialist. He has played for the youth teams and was the captain of the winning team in 2000 and also bagged the title of the Golden player of the tournament. He was also the captain at 2004 Olympics when the team won the Bronze medal in the tournament. In the 2006 World Cup too he had showed real talent and have won the man of the match title three times and won the Bronze ball for the third best player in the tournament.

World Cup 2006 Preview - Brazil by David Walker

Outright Odds: 3/1
Group F Winners: 1/4

What else is there to be said about Brazil? They are the only team to have participated in every World Cup finals and are five times winners in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. They have also finished as runners up twice in 1950 and 1998.

Manager Carlos Alberto Parreira, who won it in 1994 has possibly a better squad of players at his disposal than he did 12 years ago and instead of Bebeto, Romario and Rai he now has Adriano, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. It is unlikely the man who has lead four different nations to the finals (Kuwait 1982, UAE 1990, Brazil 1994 and Saudi Arabia 1998) will be complaining.

Brazil start as clear favourites for the tournament and have attacking resources to frighten any opposing managers. As well as the trio already described, throw Kaka, Robinho, Roberto Carlos and Juninho into the mix and goals can come from literally anywhere on the pitch.

Qualification wasn't the breeze it should have been, with two defeats and seven draws in 18 matches. It is important to consider though Parreira was forced to shuffle the pack as injuries and European teams demanding their players were kept fit.

In terms of individual talent, Brazil are streets ahead of anyone else participating in the finals, but that is not how a football team should be judged. What we do know, however, is that a fully-fit first-choice team will turn it on when it matters most of all. Brazil, even without Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and Cafu, hammered Argentina 4-1 in the final of last year's Confederations Cup held in Germany in what could be seen as the warm up" to this year's finals.

The other 31 countries participating in the tournament need some hope that Brazil can be beaten and they do have some weaknesses. Goalkeeper Dida is prone to some dodgy moments, although he is nowhere the liability he was regarded as four years during his calamitous appearances in AC Milan's Champions League campaign. Roque Junior, who had a forgettable loan spell at Leeds United, could also be seen as a weak link at the back.

These minor imperfections could be seen as clutching at straws as overall, as a team and even as a squad, Brazil ooze world class quality with the important players vastly experienced in terms of World Cup finals appearances and success.

While Brazil are the firm bookmaker's favourites, top goal scorer punters may like to try Adriano to win the Golden Boot. Strike partner Ronaldo, who won the coveted title four years ago is only offered at single figures.

Recommended Bet
The 3/1 on offer of a Brazil victory looks decidedly good value before kick-off while Adriano could shine in his first major finals appearance.

Brazil to win the World Cup @ 3/1
E/W Adriano as top goalscorer @ 12/1
