FIFA World Cup 2010 by Peri Witny

The biggest sporting event in the world is just over a year away. That, of course, is the FIFA World Cup, the prestigious soccer event that takes place once every four years.

South Africa will be the host for the 2010 World Cup, which will be staged in a variety of South African cities including Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Pretoria, Durban, and Bloemfontein. The tournament will begin on June 11, 2010 and conclude exactly one month later on July 11. Johannesburg, the country's largest city, will host the championship match in Soccer City Stadium, which is currently undergoing renovations to be new and improved in time for the World Cup.

Although the big event is still 18 months away, a long and grueling qualification process has already begun. South Africa automatically qualifies for the field of 32 teams, but the 31 other spots are still up for grabs. Qualifying matches began in August of 2007 and will finish in November of 2009. The draw ceremony to place the 32 finalists in groups will be held in December of 2009.

At the moment, various qualifying tournaments are taking place around the world. World Cup hopefuls are vying for 13 spots among European nations, five spots for African teams (in addition to South Africa), four or five for South America, three or four for North America, Central America, and Caribbean, and either no spots or one for Oceania.

In Asia, Australia and the Korea Republic are currently leading the way in their respective qualification groups. In Europe, Denmark, Greece, Slovakia, Germany, Spain, England, Serbia, Italy, and the Netherlands are atop the groups. Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Chile are currently looking good in South America. Qualifying matches in Africa and the North /Central America and Caribbean divisions have yet to commence.

Once qualifying concludes and sets the stage for the December 2009 draw ceremony in Cape Town, the 32 World Cup participants will be placed into eight groups of four teams. Each team in a group plays every other team in its group and the top two teams (16 total) advance to the knockout stage, which will take place between June 26, 2009 and June 29.

Round-robin group play will be held from June 11 to June 25.
In the first round of the knockout stage, the eight group winners play the eight group runner-ups. From there, the remainder of the tournament is single elimination. The losers of the semifinals, however, will square off in a third-place match held on July 10 in Port Elizabeth.

Italy is the defending champion, having defeated France 5-3 in penalty kicks in the 2006 title match. Brazil, which won World Cups most recently in 1994 and 2002, owns the most World Cup titles with five. Italy has four and Germany, the 2006 host nation, has three. Italy is currently third in the FIFA rankings, while Brazil is fifth and Germany is second. Spain is the top-ranked team, while the Netherlands is the other team in the Top 5. All five countries should be serious contenders in South Africa.

World Cup 2010- Italy Draw with Paraguay 1-1 by Ally White

The defending champions Italy had to redouble efforts to save the game and add a point in their match against Paraguay at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town. Paraguay let out a victory due to a mistake of goalkeeper Justo Villar. At the end, both teams got the point with a final scoring of 1-1.

During the first half, Italy controlled the possession of the ball. However, Paraguay gave the initiative to the Italians and played a perfect counterattack. The fight was primarily in midfield, away from the rival’s area, where Paraguay waited patiently.

Paraguay made the first dangerous play to the defense led by Fabio Cannavaro twenty minutes into the game, but in an oversight Enrique Vera left the ball to Montolivo. He missed the pass when shooting with little strength. Paraguay had a clear option but Aureliano Torres hit uncomfortably and his shot went wide. The Azzurri pressured the Guarani and achieved several consecutive corner kicks.

Apparently Italy had the dominion, but could not get clear options in the rival’s area. Paraguay was developing with perfection their defensive scheme. Tactically, the game was a good one, and so it proved when the Paraguayan national team managed to score through a fixed tactical play. Aureliano Torres took a long distance shot and sent his service to Alcaraz, who won the position over Daniele De Rossi and headed the ball. The Italian goalkeeper Buffon could go for the ball and Paraguay scored its first goal.

The second half began with a surprise: the departure of goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. It was speculated from the start of the game that Buffon was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world but still was suffering from some previous injuries. Buffon was replaced by Federico Marchetti.

Since the beginning of the second half, the Italian team tried to the tie the scoring and started surprising Paraguay by pushing harder. Meanwhile, the Guarani team began to take advantage of the spaces, and at minute 54, Enrique Vera shot into the goal of Marchetti, but the ball went slightly over the goal. Italy began to give some space to the Paraguayans and made some mistakes when getting out of their area. Marcelo Lippi did not hesitate to make changes in the Italian squad. He decided to replaced Marchisio to give opportunity to Mauro Camoranesi, while Paraguay respond by changing Torres for Jonathan Santana.

Italy took a corner kick by Simone Pepe. Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar went out in wrong timing and Daniele De Rossi pushed the ball into the back of the net with a header, to put the score 1-1. Due to the tiding goal of Italy, the Paraguayan coach decided to replace Nelson Haedo Valdez for Roque Santa Cruz.

With this replacement, the scheme of the Paraguayan offense didn’t change. On the contrary, there were times when Paraguay was dedicated to contain the attacks of Italy instead of seeking victory. At the end the score remained unchanged and the match finished with a 1-1.

Lippi stated that Italy needs to improve and will do in the following games, as he wasn’t pleased with the performance against Paraguay.

"We've got to improve, and I'm sure that we will improve. But so far I haven't seen any perfect squads at this World Cup. Our condition is improving and as we get better we'll start creating more chances and scoring more goals.â€

â€Our self-confidence will only keep growing game by game. You've also got to consider that we were playing a team that respected us a great deal and sat back virtually the entire time,†said Lippi.

Despite the draw, Italy will continue to defend their title by facing New Zealand on Sunday, June 20th, while Paraguay will play against Slovakia on the same day in the preliminary match.

World Cup- Paraguay Defeats Slovakia 2-0 by Ally White

The Paraguay team attained its first World Cup victory over Slovakia, 2-0, in a match that they should have won widely this past Sunday. With the win, Paraguay has four points and leads the Group F. The team is close to obtain a place in the second round if they have a good result in the next game against New Zealand.

In the first half the game was played almost exclusively in the Slovakian area. The Slovaks were energetic and had much determination for this game since they blew a victory in extra time against New Zealand. A triumph that was already in their pocket (1-1) before the tie. However, the Paraguayan team also had their strength and it began to put pressure on the Slovakian defense.

From the start of the match, Paraguay blocked the exit of Slovakia and detained their game plan. Paraguay was very offensive, while Slovakia was devoted to defend and was unable to find the right player that could handle the attack.

However, Paraguay didn’t took long to score its first goal. In a great play, Lucas Barrios served a deep pass to Enrique Vera, who surpass Duric and Strba and defined with his right foot at minute 27, to put the score 1-0 in favor of Paraguay.

Paraguay was superior in the field as they attacked constantly Jansen Mucha’s goal. In the first half Roque Santa Cruz made a great play, but he ended up missing the shot in front of the goal. This could have been the 2-0 the Paraguayans were longing for.

Slovakia was missing their determination to fight even more. The Slovakian team stalled in a chasm. Even coach Vladimir Weiss didn’t knew what to do.

The second half was even more boring than the first half. Since Paraguay was comfortable with the lead and did not attack much, all we had left was an ineffective Slovakian’ attack.

Enrique Vera almost increased the advantage with a header that went wide after a great pass by Santa Cruz.

During the final minutes, Paraguay began to attack more and at minute 77, Aureliano Torres shot from outside the area but it went wide.

The Paraguayan Coach, Gerardo Martino, made some changes to manage the lead and ensure the victory. At the end, Paulo Da Silva, who was the master of the defense, sent a short pass to Cristian Riveros inside the area and with a left-footer Riveros scored the 2-0 at minute 86.

With this goal, the game came to an end with the victory of 2-0 in favor of the Paraguayans.

Enrique Vera stated that he and his teammates were really pleased with their performance and with the victory, as they are closer to qualify to the second round.

â€We were good in defense, we did well in attack. It was a great match. We scored and we feel close to the round of 16,†Vera said.

With this victory Paraguay is placed on top of Group F and if they finished in first place they will possibly be facing Netherlands, who already qualified. However, the oranges need a positive result in the next game to ensure the first place of their group, while Paraguay has to do the same in their next match against New Zealand.
