Glasgow has appeared in some of the world's top travel guides as a must visit destination and more and more people are discovering why. It might not jump out at you as a good city break destination but once you discover what Glasgow has to offer you will find out why.
Scotland's largest city, Glasgow was founded in the 6th century with the opening of Glasgow's first Christian Church. Although the history of the area also includes Romans, Celtic Druids and Stone age man. The first Cathedral was started around 1175 and Glasgow became a major centre for commerce from the 16th century.
Glasgow today is one of a major shopping destination with an assortment of shops, shopping centres and markets to suit even the most experienced shopper. In fact the only place better to shop in the UK would be London. Add in the amazing nightlife, selection of restaurants, pubs, clubs, casinos and you will soon discover why so many people visit Glasgow.
Throughout the year there are various festivals including the West End Festival, the Celtic Connections Festival, The International Comedy Festival, Mechant City Festival, Glasgay the UK's largest gay and lesbian festival, the Jazz Festival and more. These festivals generally run every year and each year get larger and larger.
Glasgow is easy to get to and has a very busy airport with arrivals from numerous towns and cities around the UK, Europe and beyond. There are flights available with the low cost airlines offering amazingly cheap flights to and from Glasgow. Travelling by rail takes you into the centre of the city to either of the stations. The coach station is also in the city centre and like the train has regular arrivals from England and the north of Scotland. There are flights daily from all four of the airports in London and most other UK towns and cities as well.
There are lots of accommodation options in Glasgow from hostels, bed and breakfast accommodation to four and five star Glasgow hotels in the city centre. There are new hotels opening all the time as Glasgow prepares for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Glasgow's weather can be unpredictable however they are used to it and no matter what you want to do you can do almost everything regardless of the weather conditions. Glasgow does experience very hot weather as well so make sure you pack accordingly for the correct time of year.
Glasgow has a wealth of good quality attractions to visit whilst you are here including the fantastic Kelvingrove Art Gallery, which has free entry. There is also the Science Mall, which includes the Science Centre the Glasgow Tower and the Glasgow Imax.
Less than a one hours drive away is Loch Lomond and further north is the beautiful Highlands of Scotland. You are also within an easy drive away from Stirling and Edinburgh
Glasgow has it all from nightlife to culture and some of the best Indian restaurants in the UK. So visit Glasgow before its no longer one of the best kept city break destinations in Europe.
